National Museum at Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat No. 12, Jakarta Pusat, also known as the Elephant Museum or the Museum Arca. Elephant Museum called because there is a statue of the elephant in the museum yard. After Indonesian independence, on February 29, 1950 Dutch institutions that form the Institute of Culture of Indonesia (Indonesian Culture Council) and submitted to the government’s museum of the Republic of Indonesia. On 17 September 1962 the museum was renamed the Museum Center and May 28, 1979 changed again to the National Museum.

Collection
The National Museum has a collection of various items commonly used in Indonesia society everyday life, or who only used when a particular celebration or ritual. In 2006 the collection reached 140,000 pieces, but only a third that can be shown to the public. The number of collections of many museums that make it the largest and most comprehensive Tanggara Asia in Indonesia.

The National Museum has 10 of the shelf space, ethnography, bronze, prehistoric, ceramics, textiles, currency (numismatic), historical relics, treasures and stone carvings, and geography. Collection among other types of equipment life objects made of stone, animal bones, horns, and shells in prehistoric times. Tour various languages:
Indonesian Heritage Society held a tour in different languages for visitors. English language on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 09.30 and on every last Sunday of the month at 10.30. Japanese Language on Tuesday at 10:00 and the first Sunday of each month at 10:00. German every Thursday at 10:00.

The time and date for the tour in Dutch and French can be provided by first calling Indonesian Heritage Society Office at the number (62-21) 381 1551 extension 46.

Prohibition:
During his museum area, visitors are asked not to smoke, eat, and drink. The end is also forbidden to touch the items on display.
